Joe Steffy is the sole owner of Poppin Joe's Kettle Corn. He is a 20-year-old entrepreneur with multiple complex developmental disabilities, living in rural Kansas. Joe was introduced to self-employment at the age of 15 when his father Ray Steffy attended a Partner's in Policy Making series of trainings. Ray initially believed that Joe could not work due to his disabilities. After participating in a Partner's community employment training, Ray learned about self-employment as a viable option for Joe. Ray purchased a used set of Kettle Korn equipment and began working with his son, producing and selling popcorn on the weekends when Joe was 15 years old. Since that time, the business was formally launched with Joe as the sole owner with VR, a state grant, and SSA PASS funds exceeding $24,000 in startup capital. Poppin Joe's Kettle Korn is currently very successful.
